Benchmark Tempranillo from the Familia Fernandez Rivera – June 5th
Tempranillo Happy Hour – June 5th (5pm)
Join WineAlign’s David Lawrason and John Szabo MS in Spain’s magical Duero Valley as they explore the benchmark tempranillo wines of the Fernandez family. Alejandro Fernandez was a pivotal figure in putting Ribera del Duero on the international fine wine map with his iconic Pesquera Estate starting in the mid-1970s, before the appellation was even created. Tinto Pesquera was the first winery in Ribera del Duero to produce a pure tempranillo with extended ageing, bottled unfiltered, which earned early international acclaim and remains a reference point.
Fernandez later broadened his range of tempranillo expressions with the acquisition of the Condado de Haza and Dehesa La Granja estates. The former is planted to 180 hectares of tempranillo along the Duero River in the province of Burgos, a northerly and cooler part of Ribera del Duero. The latter is a working farm fully integrated into the environment of Zamora, which embodies an authentic farm-to-table lifestyle. Within the 850-hectare farm, 150 hectares of tempranillo vineyards stretch along the banks of the Guareña River. In addition to its expressive tempranillo aged in an impressive 3,000 m2 maze of 18th century tunnels running under the farm, the estate also grows other crops and raises livestock for local specialties like garbanzos (chickpeas), cured goat cheese and extra virgin olive oil.
