If I Could Buy Only One – August 21st VINTAGES Release

We asked our writers, “If you could buy only one wine from this release, which one would it be and why?”

P. Ferraud & Fils Les Merrains Beaujolais Villages 2018

($15.95, Marchands des Ameriques)
Michael GodelP. Ferraud & Fils Les Merrains Beaujolais Villages 2018 is a sweetly herbal and high fructose scenting gamay with excitable tonality and full-flavour profile. Blackish fruit in surround of a red core and this almost tomato-basil-olive oil salad feel. Quite fresh in gastronomy but deep, sonorous and leaf-earthy. Fine example at the Villages level to be sure and a steal at the price. For $16 you will not find gamay anywhere on the planet that can touch this wine, including Beaujolais.

Drappier Brut Nature Pinot Noir Champagne

($65.95, Family Wine Merchants)
Sara d’Amato – Back-to-school is imminent and it’s time to celebrate. I plan to stock up on this high-value Drappier Brut Nature Pinot Noir Champagne for this week and beyond. Brut Nature is not my go-to style of Champagne as it can prove quite austere and sharp but this non-vintage pinot noir from Drappier was texturally sublime and undeniably alluring. The lack of added sweetness was not missed. Mouth-filling autolytic flavours of toasted challah bread and a delicate creaminess add a great deal of charm and complexity to the wine. Pleasantly ripe yet still tantalizingly nervy. Will not disappoint.

Domaine Jean Pierre Sève Terroir Pouilly Fuissé 2019

($35.95, The Case for Wine)
David Lawrason – I have always had a soft spot for Pouilly-Fuisse, consistently delivering my notion of ideal chardonnay. And not just from Burgundy but from the world at large.  This Domaine Jean-Pierre Sève Terroir Pouilly-Fuissé 2019 is not too big, blowsy or obvious, yet not too slim and effete either. It comes up the middle with limestone elegance and Macon richness in the same breath, oak is present but usually nicely tucks amid fruit, lees and minerality. This fine bottle nicely captures all that very handily. And the focus and length are excellent indeed.
