If I Could Buy Only One – May 27 VINTAGES Release

We asked our writers, “If you could buy only one wine from this release, which one would it be and why?”

Domaine Maby La Forcadière Tavel Rosé 2022

($23.95, Intra Vino Inc.)
Michael Godel – When the temperature rises and Rosé is the requiem to quench a thirst I for one seek out that Tavel style. Maybe it’s a Hemingway thing or a wistful reminiscence but the dark complexion and Campari Spritz like hue gets me every time. Immediate grace is detected from the Domaine Maby La Forcadière Tavel Rosé 2022 with its subtleties and floral aromas, namely pink rose and orange blossom. Cool and complete with absolutely nothing missing or lacking in terms of flavour and character. A popular example with top level market traction and every reason for having earned this success. It really is that good and the price is reflective of terrific value.

Tasca D'Almerita Regaleali Bianco 2021

($16.95, Vin Passion)
David Lawrason – In keeping with my summer wine recommendations in the recent review of Vintages May 27 release, I present this late-comer to the tasting. The Tasca D’Almerita Regaleali Bianco 2021 is a five-star value from a classic agricultural estate at high altitude in the hills of central Sicily. It’s a combination of three indigenous varieties – catarratto, greciano and insolia – with 9% chardonnay. No wood in the picture. It is hefty yet poised with complex aromas of ripe but restrained peach/apricot, a hint of honey, acacia florality and some leesy spice. A touch of minerality on the finish keeps things even, with some grapefruit bitterness as well. The length is excellent. At this price, a case to last me through the summer is not out of the question.

Tenuta San Guido Le Difese 2020, Castagneto Carducci,

($43.95, Sylvestre Wines & Spirits)
Sara d’Amato – While I typically refrain from extolling the virtues of cabernet sauvignon from a warmer vintage, there is more to the narrative behind my selection of the Tenuta San Guido Le Difese 2020 this week. Tenuta San Guido, renowned producers of the esteemed Sassiacaia, typically craft Le Difese as an alluring blend at a more accessible price point, favoring cabernet sauvignon over sangiovese in the assemblage. However, in this particular instance, the latter prevails (with 55%), bestowing upon the wine a renewed vitality and approachability. The overarching philosophy of the estate, which prioritizes freshness over sheer power, serves as a fitting counterbalance to the inherent robustness of the red vintage at hand.

Stina Cuvée White 2021

($21.95, Croatia Unpacked)
Megha Jandhyala – My “Only One” this week is the 2021 Stina Cuvée White, a Croatian blend of two indigenous varieties (posip and vugava) with chardonnay. It is an apt summer wine, full of character and charm, with the potential to serve as a conversation-starter at summer backyard barbecues and dinner parties. Subtly saline, and brimming with stone and tropical fruit, it is, moreover, a versatile choice for seafood pairings. That it is priced at just over $20 makes it that much more appealing.
